New #Joomla Book by Daniel Chapman: “Joomla Customization” for intermediate users
Transcript From Episode CMSW2009-09-21

First book from Ninja Forge and Daniel Chapman has been released – “Joomla 1.5 Customization: Make Your Site Adapt to Your Needs”. Daniel admits that the book came about from his frustration with fixing the same simple mistakes on web page after web page. Filling in a gap, this book is aimed at the intermediate Joomla developer.

> Pick the right extensions for your site
> Plan and implement advanced configurations for extensions
> Identify and use the right tools to speed up site development
> Modify module, plugin and component functionality to suit your needs
> Modify extension and template appearances to suit your needs
> Diagnose and fix common problems on Joomla! sites.

The book is selling for $30, $15 for the on-line version. And you get 15 percent off with the Joomla15-DC coupon code. That’s a lot cheaper than hiring Daniel to fix your site. He says he’d rather add fantastic new features to his extensions.

Shout out to JoomlaDay CapeTown

Shout out to JoomlaDay CapeTown
Transcript From Episode CMSW2009-08-17

Saturday, 8/15 was the day that enthusiastic Joomla fans in South Africa joined together for JoomlaDay Cape Town. The event was held at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. If you missed it, JoomlaDay Johannesburg is coming up later in the year.

Joomla project member Ryan Ozimek traveled from the US to give the keynote and call to action in Africa, as well as a preview of Joomla 1.6.

JoomlaJunkie also attended and introduced their new template development framework for Joomla 1.5. The framework is called Morph, and promises to think for the user, one step ahead, knowing what you need. It has a Configurator that is like the dashboard in your car. By controlling every block of content on your website, you can build websites much faster and easier. Other highlights are the framework, providing the structure, themelets, the visual layer, and five powerful FX features.

Joomla Multi-Sites Extension

+1: Another Joomla Multi-sites component
Transcript From Episode CMSW2009-08-24

New Joomla Multi-sites, available in the Joomla Extension Directory, component now makes it easier for you to share your Joomla files and folders across totally independent websites.

One of the best benefits is in maintenance, as you only have to update files in one place. You can choose to have one common database, or two databases where one is the master and one is the slave, or you may have as many databases as websites.

Most user feedback seems to be positive, with one negative comment about the fact that the solution was accomplished by a modification of the Joomla core. Positive comments include the fact that the designer was willing to spend many hours to help users when the documentation was not able to, due to the broken English.

It’s also an easy tool to create a privacy policy. Regardless of the flavor of web content management system you employ, Compass Designs is always a worthwhile stop. A while back there was a discussion on Refund Policy, and how important they are. Another follow on discussion surrounded the similar need is a privacy policy. For a handy tool that generates a privacy policy for you, visit the Direct MARketing Association affiliated site, http://www.dmaresponsibility.org/PPG/#form. This tool asks some basic questions about your business and website, and then generates the privacy policy for you automatically.

Arc Technology Group Joomla Extension for Jelly Telly Video

Lovin’ what the folks at Arc did for Jelly Telly with Joomla CMS
Transcript From Episode CMSW2009-08-24

One of the more popular presentations at the CMS Expo in Chicago was the show and tell by Arc Technology Group of the project they did for Jelly Telly. John Coonen tweeted about it this week, directing folks to jellytelly.com and arctg.com.Jellytelly was created by the same guy who created the wildly popular Veggie Tales children’s television to keep pace with the trends in technology that kids are following. JellyTelly is a commercial producer of family videos, made famous by the VeggieTales series that have been incredibly popular among families around the world for the past fifteen years – first on VHS and later on DVD. Arc Technology Group worked with them in a total revamp of their production and distribution process, and the resultant management system, built as Joomla extensions allows for a far deeper user experience than ever before. To provide an engaging user experience, the 3 or 4 minute videos are seamlessly built by background logic, ensuring a variation of content with every reload, and providing contextual links that pull the reader fur ther into the site. The component will be released in the near future – for general use – as a “video content manager for Joomla” component. We can expect it to be released under appropriate open source license by the end of 2009. If you have video management requirements on your Joomla site, this component will provide the content management that you need.

Forty-Six Joomla Questions answered by Barrie North

46 Joomla Questions Answered
Transcript From Episode CMSW2009-08-24

Barrie North has put up the transcripts. He held a highly successful free webinar on Joomla as part of promoting the second edition of my book on Safari Books Online. Ably assisted By Steve Burge of Alledia.com, we gave an hour long intro to Joomla, and were also able to answer many questions. 46 of them to be exact; here are the answers. —-Newbie questions included, what do you recommend for a forum that’s simple to administrate for a newbie? How about a community? A lot of questions on the 1.5 to 1.6. For instance, there are a lot of 1.5 extensions that rely on section category in the backend to display there content, will they work on 1.6?

His book got a strong review on Slashdot.org from Michael J. Ross. “There are countless content management systems (CMSs) available for building websites, and they offer varying levels of built-in functionality. But once a site developer has successfully installed any given CMS, a critical form of help (or hindrance) is the CMS’s documentation, which for some CMSs is quite impressive, and for others absolutely atrocious. Joomla is a powerful and popular choice for Web developers, but can be daunting to newbies confused by its non-intuitive menu structure and restrictive content hierarchy. The documentation for Joomla is frequently criticized, for various reasons, and that may largely account for the popularity of third-party books, such as Barrie M. North’s Joomla! 1.5: A User’s Guide, now in its second edition.”
